Inspired by the overall architecture of the building the apartment is designed for inasmuch an optimal layout as for spatial experience. Irregularly angular spaces, and numerous residual nooks and recesses are rationalized. The oddly shaped master bedroom is combined with its neighboring room through concealed doors to create a larger more luxurious room. This can be divided into a third room with an en suite as required. The paneling also conceals a large walk in wardrobe and bathroom.

For Note D, reshaping the interior architecture is a great design opportunity - volumes and geometries that are not only a decorative backdrop but a primary device that creates interior atmosphere. For example, the custom designed fireproof lobby is as much a functional requirement as an aesthetic necessity for the living room. The seemingly infrastructural element becomes the biggest feature as you enter the apartment. The sculptural wall talks to the petal shaped decks across the living room.

Furniture pieces speak as much about the apartment design as the clients personal inclination. Italian sofas, Persian carpets, antique side tables & custom made tables from marble wastage are chosen to complement each other.

A three bedroom apartment is re configured and designed as a single large suite – to house a private space for a couple to relax – a personalized space to pursue quiet and meaningful time. A warm material palette of wood and black Brazilian slate complements the soft light from outside as the apartment sits among a foliage of trees. Windows open up to planters with evergreen species and chirping birds that nest in the branches. Inside, the house is a collection of art and artefacts, books and entertainment gadgets and other items of personal indulgence.

The living room is designed as an extension of the bedroom, with the dominant seating designed as a modified configuration of beds. The entrance foyer segregates public areas with a wood and glass partition that prevents direct visual and physical access to the remaining house. Customized Rorschach pattern bathroom tiles act as stimulating wall art in the master bathroom. A vintage surgical light is paired with a custom designed dining table to occupy the awkward shape of the dining area. Series of display stools line the windows in the remaining living space. Pitched design for false ceiling camouflage the slab structure and distorts the perception of a low ceiling.

The clients were looking for a ‘home like office’ – warm, comfortable, non monotonous and non sterile.

All layout options focused on two things – creating a variety of office desks and creating casual seating spaces breaking the rows of computers that dotted the space. Display spaces were critical to showcase the branding and products created by the firm. Transparency and textures have been employed to complement each other and create a space that is combination of openness and variety.

The layout creates an interesting path and vision while moving across the office space, taking you through different open and semi enclosed cabins, work stations, conference room, library, waiting area and large floating table tops. The free movement of chairs across the space adds to the physical freedom already offered visually. Mandana stone, with wood polished to complement its darkness is combined with sheers, glass and brass. The back drop – everywhere – is suitable to showcase objects, graphics, works. Each piece is custom made from stone wood and metal. Extreme care is taken to come up with thinner structural members like staircase rail, glass mullions and furniture legs. The overall lighting is perfect to work on desks but subdued enough to suit all the artwork on the walls.

The project is a classic Cuffe Parade sea facing apartment.

With old structural walls and low ceiling heights, limiting the outside view, interiors dominate your experience. Designed as a contemporary classic residence, the process explored proportions and articulation of moldings and wainscoting. The spaces are kept very warm with complete wall coverings and paneling work. The couple and their new born enjoy the two sea facing bedrooms which are clutter free and minimal. Wall to wall carpeting and high molded skirting provide both functionality and comfort. The living room has an enclosed ‘balcony’ perfect for an intimate dining experience, surrounded by bay windows. The dining table is in exclusive black and white marble sitting on customized brass legs. Breaking the classic patterns and geometry is the wooden floor, rebelliously flowing in different angles not aligning with the ‘age old norms’.

With new high rise types offering free apartment plans, the opportunity in interior design has gone well beyond curation of spaces. It presents us with a chance to customize the layout, create spatial experiences and envisage new relationships between inside and outside as well as those between rooms, all tailor made to the client’s needs.

At ASC apartment, the ‘as-built building plan’ was substantially altered to make it more like a ‘house’. The family of four has 3 bedrooms and a den for get-togethers. Each styled to individual tastes including the den to double up as a gentleman’s lounge. The public entertainment areas extend from one deck to the other via separate drawing and dining rooms. The vocabulary is simple and straight. Natural slate for outdoors and natural wood for indoor spaces create a combination of urban comfort with a feel of a second home. Furniture and lighting consists of signature pieces from Italian brands. Bedrooms have more customized furniture pieces designed to fit in a more personalized manner.
